March 8th is celebrated worldwide as an International Women’s Day. And it is a great occasion for every woman to celebrate her successes at work as well as to take a look at achievements and think about improvements. And so…

Because of that, we decided to write about 8 inspirational women in project management! So take that break which you’ve been planning on taking, make a cup of fresh coffee and take a moment to get inspired in your work!
1. Katherine Graham
Katherine Graham, also called Kay, was the first female publisher of a major American Newspaper, The Washington Post. Her persona was put on the map after “The Post” movie premiere in which Meryl Streep portrayed her as a strong, persistent and brave woman who decided to publish the documents concerning the famous Watergate scandal.
Even though she might not be strictly connected to project management, she can be considered as a great leader and manager who lead her company towards success no matter the risks, thanks to the clear company’s vision. Such attitude is especially sought-after in project management.
2. Sheryl Sandberg
Sheryl Sandberg is the chief operating officer (COO) of Facebook and founder of Leanin.org (the Lean In Foundation). Additionally, she was the first woman to be on Faebook’s board of directors. She actively works in the business world spreading the importance of women’s leadership and female presence in the business. Her book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” became a bestseller.
Her example shows that any woman can be a great leader and be good at managing a company.
3. Wendy Kopp
Wendy Kopp is the CEO and co-founder of the TechforAll non-profit organization which associates companies which provide solutions to make life easier. Also, she is the founder of Teach For America (TFA). Another non-profit organization whose aim is to make it possible for youth to learn and have access to education. The organization aim is to “enlist, develop, and mobilize as many as possible of our nation’s most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence.”
Wendy Kopp is another example of a woman who was able to achieve success. Her efforts to close the social and economical gap of young people can inspire other women to take risks and aim high.
4. Rosabeth Moss Kanter
She is a professor of business at Harvard Business School and director and chair of the Harvard University Advanced Leadership Initiative. She is distinguished by her scientific works but also for many books on change management. Her works on management have been widely acclaimed by critics.
5. Muriel Siebert
Siebert was the first woman to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange and was the first woman to head one of the NYSE’s member firms. This is an impressive achievement since being part of the NYSE was not something people recognized as a work for a woman.
Muriel Siebert is especially inspiring that she was a strong supporter of women working in the business world. Her approach can be inspiring in project management for all women who struggle.
6. Rebecca Winston
There is no doubt that Rebecca Winston is an inspiring person in the world of project management. She is former Vice-Chair, Chair, Fellow of the PMI (Project Management Institute) but also project and product Consultant to US Government. With her broad knowledge and long experience, she is the expert on project management.
7. Elizabeth Harrin
Elizabeth Harrin is not only a project manager, but also the author of a popular blog A Rebel’s Guide To Project Management. Her website serves many people (not only women) as a source of inspiration in their work as project managers. Elizabeth also provides helpful tips on common issues. And the her goal, as she said in the podcast Stay on Top of Your Work, is: “I think so much of what we see and so much of the project management literature is about what works in an ideal environment where you have got a wonderful stakeholder, group and you have a perfect sponsor who turns up to every meeting and your team just loves changes and does everything that you ask. All your tools work perfectly. And who works in an environment like that? So I prefer to talk about what real project management is like.”
8. YOU
It is great to have role models who serve as an inspiration in our work. However, it is important to remember not to compare yourself to anybody. Especially that there will always be someone better. Be the best version of you and always give 100% in your work and you will be among one of the best project managers!
